Bay Shabu
Posted by Gus on January 10th, 2009 filed in California, Consumption, rant, Restaurants, San Francisco, USAWe actually ended going to Bay Shabu (68 W. Portal Ave.). Shabu shabu is a traditional variant of hot pot. The dish is related to sukiyaki in style, where both use thinly sliced meat and vegetables, and is usually served with dipping sauce. However, it is very different in taste; shabu shabu is more savory and less sweet than sukiyaki. The main dipping sauces served are: sesame sauce and ponzu sauce.
Eating shabu shabu is like hot pot where the pieces of vegetable or sliced beef are swished back and forth several times. Shabu shabu roughly translates to “swish-swish”. Cooked meat and vegetables are usually dipped in ponzu or goma sauce and served with a bowl of steamed white rice.
